5 Signs Your Business Needs an Upgraded Security Plan

Is Your Security Plan Keeping Up?

Security threats evolve constantly, but security arrangements often do not. Many organisations — from small offices to large factories — are operating with plans that were designed for a different era, a different building, or a different risk environment. Here are five signs it is time for a review.

1. You Have Experienced a Recent Incident

Any incident — theft, unauthorised access, vandalism, or workplace violence — is a clear signal that your current plan has gaps. Rather than treating it as a one-off, treat it as data. A professional security audit can identify the root cause and prevent recurrence.

2. Your Physical Environment Has Changed

Have you moved premises, expanded your office, added a warehouse, or changed shift patterns? Every physical or operational change potentially invalidates part of your existing security arrangements. Access points, blind spots, and staffing ratios all need to be reassessed.

3. Your Staff Has Not Received Security Awareness Training

Human error remains the most common cause of security breaches. If your employees cannot identify a tailgating attempt, a suspicious package, or a phishing email, your perimeter security is largely irrelevant. Training is not a one-time event — it should be refreshed annually.

A security plan is only as strong as the people who implement it every day.

4. Your Technology Is Outdated

CCTV systems older than five years often lack the resolution, storage capacity, or connectivity needed for modern incident response. Access control systems that rely solely on physical keys or outdated swipe cards are vulnerable. An audit will surface these gaps quickly.

5. You Have Not Reviewed Your Plan in Over 12 Months

Best practice is an annual security review, or immediately following any significant change. If neither has happened recently, you are overdue. Contact SGS for a complimentary initial assessment.
